The Power of Play for Adults: Why It Matters and How to Bring It Into Your Life

The Power of Play For Adults: Play isn't just for kids!

When we hear the word play, we often think of children running around, laughing, and letting their imaginations run wild. But play isn’t just for kids—it’s vital for adults too. Play brings balance to our busy lives, helps us cope with stress, and makes us feel more alive. The best part? It doesn’t need to be complicated. Everyday activities like gardening, laughing with a friend, or playing a quick board game can have big benefits for your wellbeing.

Why Play Matters for Adults

Research shows that regular play offers powerful benefits. Play has the power to:

  • Relieves stress – Play triggers endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Laughter especially can ease tension and promote relaxation.

  • Improves brain function – Games, puzzles, and new experiences stimulate the brain, sharpening memory and focus.

  • Stimulates the mind and boosts creativity – Play helps you think outside the box, approach problems differently, and discover fresh ideas.

  • Maintains physical fitness, strength, and flexibility – Playful movement, whether it’s dancing, hiking, or sports, keeps your body strong and agile.

  • Improves relationships and connections – Sharing play deepens bonds with friends, family, and colleagues, helping us feel more connected.

  • Improves productivity – Taking playful breaks refreshes your mind, leaving you more energized and efficient when you return to work.

  • Develops social skills – Through playful interaction, adults build empathy, communication, and cooperation skills that enrich both personal and professional relationships.

The 8 Play Personalities

Not everyone plays the same way. Dr. Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute for Play, identified eight “play personalities” that highlight how different people engage in play:

  1. The Joker – loves laughter, jokes, and silliness.

  2. The Kinesthete – enjoys moving their body through dance, sports, or physical activity.

  3. The Explorer – seeks discovery, whether it’s exploring new places, ideas, or emotions.

  4. The Competitor – thrives on games and contests, playing to win.

  5. The Director – enjoys planning, organizing, and bringing people together.

  6. The Collector – finds joy in gathering and curating objects or experiences.

  7. The Artist/Creator – loves making things, whether it’s art, food, or new ideas.

  8. The Storyteller – brings play to life through imagination, performance, or narrative.

Looking at this list, you could do your own play audit! Which play personality (or combination of them) are you?

I think I am a mix of Kinesthete, Explorer, Artist/Creator and Storyteller. I love being creative, telling stories, finding new places to visit and dancing brings me so much joy!

    Finding Your Own Play

The beauty of play is that there’s no “right” way to do it. Whether you’re laughing at a silly joke, planting herbs in the garden, or competing in a local trivia night, play can fit naturally into your life. The key is to make space for it - regularly, and be present while doing it.

So ask yourself: What is my play personality? Once you know, lean into it. Play is more than entertainment—it’s a pathway to a healthier, happier, more connected life.

Let's play!
