About Bundabubs

The story starts in Bundaberg in 2018, when I had a newborn, knew almost no one, and couldn't find many classes for mums and babies to go to together. So I did what teachers do: I made my own. Messy play sessions, nature play, paint on small hands and I loved every minute of it. When we left Bundaberg for Perth in 2020, I left proud of what those classes had meant to that little community.

Then we arrived in a new city and COVID hit. I wasn't ready to restart, so instead I spent a lot of time on the floor with my kids, playing. Testing ideas. Watching what happened when children were simply given materials, time and no instructions. That curiosity, combined with everything I'd learned in classrooms, slowly became something I hadn't had a name for yet.

In 2022, Bundabubs relaunched as art play.

The idea came from something I'd noticed throughout my teaching career. Children would arrive at a creative activity and immediately ask: "Can I use this colour?" "Can I change it?" "Can I try something different?" They weren't short on ideas. They were seeking permission to trust themselves. I kept hearing the same phrases over and over: "I can't do this." "Mine isn't as good." "I need an eraser." And I kept thinking: there has to be another way. Bundabubs is that other way.

Every session is built around one simple belief: children learn best when they are trusted to lead. The paint, clay, collage and loose parts are the invitation. The real work happens in the environment I create — one where there are no wrong answers, no pressure to produce a perfect outcome, and no adult interrupting to help when help wasn't asked for. Children follow rules all day. A Bundabubs session is often one of the only parts of their day where none of that applies.

What I see, again and again, is children arrive hesitant and leave proud. They stop asking "Can I?" and start saying "I did." That's not an art outcome. That's a confidence outcome.

In four years, Bundabubs has welcomed around 500 families across beach art play classes, school holiday workshops, after-school programs, birthday parties, school incursions, toddler sensory sessions, community events and adult creative workshops. In 2026 we were named a finalist in the Children's Education and Activities Award at the AusMumpreneur Awards, recognised from more than 2,000 nominations nationwide.

Adults get their own version of this too. My workshops are less "paint this exact thing" and more "take a breath, trust yourself, and see what happens." Most people haven't made something with their hands since they were kids. That first session back is often equal parts terrifying and wonderful.

My own two boys remain my best research assistants. Every idea gets tried on them first.

Outside of Bundabubs you'll find me walking along the coast with an iced coffee and an audiobook, hunting for hidden treasures in op shops, or eating Victoria Sponge and dancing with friends to hits from the 90s.
